Advances in technology has brought about many new careers and job categories. Now there is an official degree in AI. The job title is an “AI Engineer”. It is a multiple sector degree in that they are needed in every career field. The Engineer of Artificial Intelligence will require an understanding of how artificial intelligence impacts in every field from home automation, healthcare, transportation, energy, national security, and even entertainment. They will have to apply the principles ethically and responsibility as it relates to each sector. I believe we will soon see a comprehensive intro to AI ethics in every college degree path in the near future. Even Middle School and High School students as well as the general public need to be educated on the principles enough to not fall victim to an artificial intelligence scam artist. This is a much-needed field as we must navigate with caution and ethics.
Pennsylvania School of Engineering and Applied Science has announced the launch of a groundbreaking Bachelor of Science in Engineering in Artificial Intelligence (AI). This marks the first undergraduate AI degree offered by an Ivy League institution and positions Penn Engineering at the forefront of AI education in the U.S.
The new degree program is designed to address the rapidly growing impact of generative AI across various sectors, including healthcare, energy, transportation, and national security. It aims to produce innovative AI engineers equipped with the knowledge to apply AI principles responsibly and ethically.
Interim President J. Larry Jameson highlighted the program’s alignment with Penn’s strategic framework, emphasizing its role in advancing the university’s cutting-edge capabilities. The program is made possible through the generous support of Raj and Neera Singh, whose vision and philanthropy have significantly contributed to the initiative.
Students enrolled in the Raj and Neera Singh Program in Artificial Intelligence will gain the skills to develop AI tools capable of harnessing the internet’s vast knowledge, providing meticulous attention to detail, and aiding in scientific breakthroughs. The program is set to commence in fall 2024, with Amy Gutmann Hall serving as the hub for faculty and students1.
